Thupten Jinpa, Ph.D., is a former monk and has been educated in classical Tibetan tradition and also holds a Ph.D. from Cambridge University, where he also worked as a research fellow.

Jinpa has been the principal English translator to H.H. the Dalai Lama for over twenty five years and has translated and edited numerous books by the Dalai Lama, including the New York Times Bestseller Ethics for the New Millennium, Beyond Religion, and Transforming the Mind. His own publications include The Wisdom of the Kadam Masters, Essential Mind Training,  (both being translations of classical Tibetan texts with introductions), Self, Reality and Reason in Tibetan Philosophy: Tsongkhapa’s Quest for the Middle View, as well as translations of major Tibetan works featured in The Library of Tibetan Classics series. Jinpa is the main author of CCT (Compassion Cultivation Training), an eight-week formal program, developed at the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE), Stanford University.

Jinpa is an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Religious Studies at McGill University, Montreal. He has been a core member of the Mind and Life Institute, which is dedicated to promoting dialogues and collaborations between the sciences and contemplative knowledge, especially Buddhism, and since January 2012 the Chairman of the Institute. He is the founder and president of the Institute of Tibetan Classics, Montreal, and, as the general series editor, heads its project of critical editing, translation, and publication of key classical Tibetan texts aimed at creating a definitive reference series entitled The Library of Tibetan Classics. Jinpa lives in Montreal and is married with two daughters.
